Love You

In the 60s, the flower children gravitated towards love slogans and all things simple and beautiful and groovy.

Give a little time for the child within you
Don’t be afraid to be young and free
Undo the locks and throw away the keys
And take off your shoes and socks, and run you.

The cynics that came before them and the cynics that came after them as well as the cynics that co-existed in their era oftentimes thought of them as unrealistically naive crunchy granolas who were unable to see the way things really are in the world.  However, the world could certainly benefit from having a few more crunchy granolas in this world even today.

Just because the world can be a challenging and ugly place from time to time doesn’t mean that everything good has fallen by the wayside and been forgotten.  Simplicity and happiness aren’t the sole domain of very young children and seniors remembering their own delightful childhoods.

Run through the meadow and scare up the milking cows
Run down the beach kicking clouds of sand
Walk a windy weather day, feel your face blow away
Stop and listen: Love you.

Any one of us can run through a meadow if we choose to do so although I wouldn’t recommend scaring any cows, milking or otherwise.  And any one of us can find a beach within driving distance of where we live (sometimes you can get there by riding on a city bus if you’re inclined to really reminisce about what it was like to be a child back in the day) and kick up clouds of sand.   While you can’t just conjure up weather, whether it’s a light summer breeze or a brisk March blast or a foreboding October wind, it doesn’t cost a penny to step outside and become the experience you seek.

Roll like a circus clown, put away your circus frown
Ride on a roller coaster upside down.

I know there are those of you who will say that life has changed so much in the past 40 years alone.  I know there will be some who will bemoan the fact that life isn’t as simple or happy or easy as it once was.  That’s all true but it doesn’t have to be that way.

There’s no law against being carefree and child-like (not childish) from time to time.  Nothing prevents us from finding pleasure in life’s simple pleasures that cost us only time and awe and the ability to let go of what cramps us into our little spaces, unable to do much more than scramble about society’s Skinner’s maze.

I love forget-me-nots, fluffernutters, sugarpops
I’ll hug you and kiss you and love you
La, la, la… Love you.

Just a few days ago, we lost a good and true spirit to cancer.  Chris Dedrick.  He was a magnificent composer and songwriter, and was a great mentor to a number of composers, songwriters and musicians over the years.  If a composer, songwriter or musician phoned him up at home, he always had a moment to spare to listen to what you had to say.

And right to the end, Chris lived life with the same gentle, caring, compassionate nature those who knew him loved and admired so much about him.
