Some of my blog readers and visitors love World music.
For those who aren’t familiar with World music or who aren’t too sure what World music is, World music is music from cultures other than those of Western Europe and North America that are influenced by non-Western musical traditions usually from the Middle East, Asia and Africa. World music often has a danceable rhythm as well.
About a month before my latest instrumental CD “Dreamtime” was released, Bill King included the title track in his radio show Ejazz News. Ejazz News has been the number one jazz news website since 2001 and covers the latest in jazz and blues music; Bill King is the former editor of Jazz Report Magazine and the artistic director of the Beaches International Jazz Festival. That he liked the CD was fantastic but to have him include the title track in one of his radio programs was high praise for the quality of the music on the “Dreamtime” CD.
Over on the World Music chart for Canada on Reverbnation.com, the number 1 position is held by Surrey (BC) resident, K S Makhan, a recording artist who has made his mark on the world Bhangra scene and is one of the leading Punjabi stars today.
The number 2 position goes to Ajax (ON) resident, Avi Pearce who writes and performs pop-flavoured world music. She received a 2011 Hollywood Music In Media Awards nomination for her newest song “Moonlight.” This follows on the heels of having been nominated in 2008 and in 2009 for a Hollywood Music In Media Award.
And the number 3 position goes to the Dragon Ritual Drummers, a critically acclaimed European and North American band with 6 members and hailing from St. Catharines (ON).
The “Dreamtime” CD is just barely a month old; it was released August 24, 2011. As of this week, I find myself in the number 18 position (as of Tuesday, October 4, 2011) on the World Music chart across Canada. I’ve been in the music industry for years now and I know how much work is involved in getting the word out about a new release. It’s a full-time job and a half but especially so if you’re an Indie artist like I am. To reach the number 18 position in a little over a month is quite an accomplishment to say the least, especially in light of the calibre of artists who hold the top 3 positions on the national chart.
The success of this CD is especially important to me because it’s part of my son’s “Dancing In Dreamtime” project to raise money for Make-A-Wish. He lives with an incurable life-threatening neuromuscular autoimmune disease that strikes 2 in 1 million kids and he lives with an Autism Spectrum Disorder and he lives with a bilateral congenital kidney defect. He also has a raft of less-serious-than-those-already-mentioned health conditions that impact on his life. And with all of that interfering with his life, he still thinks of how he can help make life better for others.
His wish is to have the “Dancing In Dreamtime” project raise as much money as possible for Make-A-Wish so the organization can grant wishes to other children like him who are living with life-threatening medical conditions. This is why the “Dreamtime” CD is donating 20% of the price of the CD — whether you purchase a hard copy or you download it from iTunes and other major download portals — to Make-A-Wish.
The “Dreamtime” CD is a labour of love and judging from the welcome it’s getting on the World Music chart for Canada, that love is spreading! Let’s help make Lewis’ wish come true and help Make-A-Wish grant dreams for kids living with life-threatening medical conditions who are on the waiting list.
It would mean so much to Lewis and it would mean so much to the kids who are waiting for their dreams to come true. Believe that wishes can come true and then be part of that. It’s an amazing feeling that will stay with you the rest of your life.
