It’s not every day that an international fast food chain reaches out to another international fast food chain in the hopes that they can do some good on Peace Day. Burger King reached out to McDonald’s on August 26, 2015. Yes, the king reached out to the clown.
McDonald’s didn’t seem to warm to the suggestion, and turned Burger King down.
Denny’s, Wayback Burgers, Krystal, and Giraffas USA, loved Burger King’s idea and together, they decided to put together an amazing burger that was made up of a little bit of all of their favorite burgers! Denny’s Bacon Slamburger, Wayback’s Wayback Classic, Krystal’s Cheese Krystal, Giraffas’ Brutus and Burger King’s Whopper sandwiches became the Peace Day Burger.
And just as Burger King suggested initially in their proposal to McDonald’s, it will be offered for one day only in Atlanta at a pop up restaurant located at 1122 Northside Drive. The Peace Day Burger will be available from 11:00 AM until 6:00 PM or until all 1,500 sandwiches are snapped up. The Peace Day Burgers will be given away free of charge.
And the best part yet: All participating burger brands will make a impactful monetary donation to Peace One Day!
Peace One Day is a not-for-profit organization that raises awareness of the importance of global ceasefires and non-violence. Since 1999 (when Peace One Day was established), the organization has done so much to help those living in war-torn regions of the globe because that’s how Peace One Day founder, Jeremy Gilley rolls.
So you might think that Burger King is using this opportunity to slam dunk McDonald’s, right? Wrong. Burger King continues to be warm and welcoming to McDonald’s and are of the opinion that whether McDonald’s does something in collaboration with Burger King or on its own, raising awareness of Peace Day is what counts.
As to what McDonald’s will be doing on Peace Day is still unknown to the general public and the media. McDonald’s CEO Steve Easterbrook vaguely hinted at “something bigger to make a difference” but has yet to come out and say what that “something bigger” might be. Hopefully on Monday, September 21, McDonald’s will make a big announcement that will make this year’s Peace Day the most amazing Peace Day to date!
But even if they don’t, what these fast food restaurants have done will certainly bring attention to the cause, and hopefully bring about change based on social and global consciousness.
UPDATE (21 September 2015 9:00 PM EST): At about 3:00 PM EST, McDonald’s posted this message to the McDonald’s Facebook page.
In other words, McDonald’s contribution to Peace Day is an advertisement that reiterates the facts that are known about life for those living in war-torn regions of the world, with a Call-To-Action tacked on asking McDonald’s customers and supporters to donate money. There’s no word on whether a monetary donation to the World Food Programme is being made by McDonald’s corporate head office.
